Damascus: The Trustee of the Nation!

Damascus, which was called the Queen of Cities, was an important center of the Byzantine Empire, Heraclius used to camp here after coming from Rome. The honor of starting the military campaign towards Syria on behalf of the state of Medina went to the great companion of the Prophet, Sayyiduna Yazid bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him). During the Siddiqui era, he was the one who was sent to Syria as the commander of the first army. The rest of Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah, Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid, Sayyiduna Shurabil and Sayyiduna Amr bin Al-Aas (may Allah be pleased with them) were sent as reinforcements.

Therefore, after the conquest, Sayyiduna Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) was appointed the first governor of this city. The army of Islam besieged the city on 16 Muharram 14 AH, which lasted for 6 months. This was the first fortified and strongly walled city that the Muslims had encountered. They had neither the experience nor the necessary equipment to conquer such cities. In view of its importance, the five leaders gathered together with their respective armies to besiege it. Hazrat Abu Ubaidah (RA) was at the eastern gate (Bab al-Jabia) with his army and Hazrat Khalid (RA) was opposite him at the western gate. The armies of Hazrat Amr (RA) bin Al-As, Hazrat Yazid (RA) bin Abi Sufyan (RA) and Hazrat Shurahbil (RA) were also surrounding the city at different gates.
